Invention

Invention is a toccata for piano duet. Wikipedia defines a toccata as "a virtuoso piece ... typically for a keyboard ... featuring fast-moving, lightly fingered or otherwise virtuosic passages or sections, with or without imitative or fugal interludes, generally emphasizing the dexterity of the performer's fingers."

The piece in many ways can be seen as "having an idea and then developing it" -hence the title. The word Invention is also intended to illicit a mechanical, cog-like image whilst also referring to Bach’s Inventions, which are widely considered standard educational repertoire for piano. Bach's Two Part Inventions are usually made up of two perpetual rhythms that run alongside each other, for example quavers against crotchets. These get passed back and forth between the hands in a simple and enchanting imitative counterpoint. The Invention by FLOWERS treats the two pianists like Bach treats the two hands, where perpetual rhythms get passed back and forth from pianist to pianist. In performances the pianos are to be spaced sufficiently far apart for listeners to be able to distinguish between them, and in recordings this should be achieved by panning them.

LAMENT

LAMENT is based on the birdsong of extinct birds. Flowers found archived recordings of the Lānaʻi ʻalauahio (Paroreomyza montana montana) and the ʻŌʻū (Psittirostra psittacea), transcribed them and based the piece on this material.

The piece was commissioned by the RNCM to be included as part of a series of socially distant concerts broadcast online during lockdown (Nov 2020).
